Human Aircraft Roadmap for a Virtual Intelligent System
Between 2019 and 2021, Skylife Engineering led the European HARVIS project, which explored how Artificial Intelligence in the cockpit can support pilots in decision-making during complex situations.
The Project
How can pilots be supported in making decisions during complex situations?
The HARVIS project aims to answer this question by developing a future concept of Artificial Intelligence in the cockpit.
Air travel is increasing significantly across Europe, with no indication that this trend will reverse. The integration of unmanned aircraft into the airspace will make air traffic management even more complex.
This will inevitably have a significant impact on pilots' work, requiring them to process increasing amounts of information and perform new tasks. Framing human–machine interaction as a partnership will help machines better understand humans while enabling people to collaborate more effectively with them. In the cockpit, this partnership will enable pilots to use a new generation of self-learning technologies capable of anticipating their needs and adapting to their cognitive states.
Objetives
The main objective of the HARVIS project is to determine how cognitive computing algorithms, implemented within a digital assistant, could help pilots make decisions in complex situations. To achieve this objective, the project will deliver:
- A state of the art review of cognitive computing algorithms.
- A future concept of Artificial Intelligence in the cockpit.
- A set of realistic scenarios in which a digital assistant is likely to provide benefits for flight operations.
- A roadmap providing guidance for the adoption of the demonstrated concept by 2035.

Financing
The HARVIS project was developed under the European JTI-CS2-2018-CFP08-THT-02 call, with 100% funding provided by the European Commission.
The project was carried out between 2019 and 2021, with a budget of 183.750 € allocated to Skylife Engineering as project coordinator and a total consortium budget of 826.500 €, in collaboration with ENAC, UPV, and Deep Blue.
