Integrated Digital Assistant for Production Processes

The Project

Context and Challenges

Across manufacturing industries—including the automotive, aerospace, and shipbuilding sectors—unexpected production stoppages, or downtime, remain a significant operational challenge. Several key factors contribute to this issue:

  • Equipment failures.
  • Tool failures.
  • Human error.
  • Inadequate maintenance.
  • Inventory and stock shortages.
  • Poor planning.
  • Lack of communication.
  • Inefficient changeover and setup processes.

Our Approach

The project's research is structured around the following main objectives:

OG1: Investigate a software platform, connected to a range of hardware devices, capable of providing training and operational assistance across multiple industrial sectors, including aerospace, shipbuilding, and traditional manufacturing.

OG2: Integrate cutting-edge technologies—including Natural Language Processing (NLP), computer vision, mixed reality, and IoT architecture—into a unified production support platform.

OG3: Establish a continuous feedback loop between virtual technical training (Smart Learning) and digital operational assistance. The system monitors support requests to identify recurring issues and automatically recommends the creation of targeted training modules when a particular problem occurs frequently. Likewise, if recurring non-conformities are detected during virtual training, the platform evaluates the inclusion of dedicated work instructions as interactive guidance to reinforce practical knowledge for those specific manual processes.

The Solution

The proposed solution is based on an open, integrated, interoperable, service-oriented, and scalable platform that brings together these technologies to provide comprehensive support for technical personnel involved in production and maintenance activities.

The platform enables users to receive training in production and maintenance tasks through Smart Learning, while also allowing them to execute work instructions directly on the factory floor using interactive augmented reality guidance or by receiving real-time assistance from a remote expert through mixed reality and computer vision technologies.

Benefits:

The platform continuously monitors remote assistance requests submitted by users to generate tailored training programmes based on 3D models and metadata stored within a central media library.

When the system detects a high frequency of support requests related to a particular task, it recommends that administrators create dedicated virtual training modules to strengthen technicians' knowledge and skills in that specific area.

The following diagram illustrates the overall platform architecture, the interaction between its different technological building blocks, its integration with existing production systems, and the modular, multi-purpose visualisation of operational information.

Financing

The ADIPRO project was developed under the Spanish national Connected Industry 4.0 R&D&I Projects (ACTIVA Funding) programme, with a total budget of 483.005 €. Of this amount, 96.601 € was awarded to Skylife Engineering as grant funding, enabling the development of an integrated platform that supports both training and operational activities across industrial sectors such as aerospace, shipbuilding, and manufacturing.
